Year Three Kahutara School, July 4th 2024
After planting trees in the riparian edge of the river on Ruamāhanga Farm and spending time being quiet beside the water the children sat inside our new field classroom, AKA bell tent. As a group we gathered words that described the qualities of water and then the children wrote letters of appreciation to water:

Dear Water,
Thank you for helping all of the trees. You are life saving. Your ripples are beautiful and thank you for helping the fish. It is beautiful how you flow.
Love
Wilson

Back at school Rod and I worked with the whole class, supporting them to imagine themselves as a droplet of water. Ideas came thick and fast as we collectively gathered a word bank on the white board; How did they feel ? What was their journey like? Where did they go ? What did they look like? Then in silence they wrote in first person freefall style about their journey as a droplet of water, which some of them performed to the class.
As a tiny droplet of water I started my journey in a cloud, I was happy I wanted to escape the world! Suddenly I came out of the cloud! Then I became a snowflake! I landed on a mountain. I became a sparkling river and felt very happy. I was amazed. By Theo
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey in the icey Awa. I leaped into the Awa and zoomed back down. The eels were trying to bite me and crayfish were trying to pinch me. I wonder how high they could jump. I threw a rock to stop them biting me. The rain was flowing so it got very deep. By Mairangi
As a tiny droplet of water I started my journey in the snowy mountain. I travelled to a waterfall and I was nervous to go down it but I got swooped away in it and after the journey I was tired. By Wyatt
As a tiny droplet of water I started my amazing journey, in a white fluffy cloud where I had been all my life. Suddenly the cloud started to get darker and darker all of a sudden I fell! I felt a little bit confused but mostly frightened because this had never happened to me. I’d been in a cloud all my life! When I landed i realised I was in a big wave of water It was the Ruamahanga river I was in river for days, I went down waterfalls through strong rapids all the way to the sea where at that point i was hopeless, so I talked to the wise starfish and he said “just think of a happy place and all your worries will go away”. So I did what he said I found myself flying. I returned to my fluffy white cloud. By Flynn
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey in the tall tall clouds I feel nervous because I have a big journey ahead of me, suddenly I drop out of the cloud swish swishI I dropped on a rock then I became snow and then the sun melted me I felt scared it felt nerve wracking. Suddenly I dropped into a cold river past the rocky river, then down a waterfall and into the sea. Then I got sucked into a hose and sprouted onto a tree in the forest. I felt the tree wanted me and two weeks later I got sucked into the tree then I dropped. By Georgia S
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey on the snow mountain. It was really hard to move but when I came to a waterfall I went down. I was nervous at first but when I went down it was really fun. But instead of the waterfall I had to cross the desert but then the mist picked me up. I went to the sea. By Madison M
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey in the shimmery sparkly lake, then I started evaporating into the bright blue sky and turned into a cloud.
Then I got heavy and fell from the sky as beautiful wet rain and the soil soaked me up and I went into tree roots. Then I started dropping off the tree leaves and started flowing back into the river and my cycle continued. By Harley-Rose
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey on the mountain, then I started to flow down the river very fast. I felt tired but calm. At the end I ended up at the ocean and then after a while I ended in the land and I fed the trees. By Jane
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey on the mountain. I was really scared because I rushed down the rocky rocks and I ended up in a stream down below. I fed some trees and plants. One day I got sucked up and turned into a cloud. I was really scared and worried then I fell into the land and ended up in the underground river. Then I rose up into the ocean with my friends but I knew it would happen again. By Olivia
As a tiny droplet of water,I started my journey from the icy large clouds. I zoomed down the river on my journey. I saw crayfish and crabs. I gave them water because they were thirsty. I went through the gigantic snow topped mountains, a red shimmery glow on top of the mountain. My journey as a droplet of water was going on a mysterious adventure. By Harrison Cuff
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey. I was a freezing big cloud. I was blasted away. I saw crayfish and wetlands. I was helping them live. I was happy and joyful because I helped them. I fed the trees and plants. I was sparkly and happy. It was so colourful under there I saw so many fish and crabs. By Hope
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey at the mountains as snow. I flet excited but scared at the same time. Suddenly the sun came out and I melted! Then I fell down into the Ruamahanga wetland and I felt the plants suck me up. I felt the tree grow and I was happy. The wetland felt boggy. By Evan
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey in the hills but then I started rolling down the hills but then I came to the big river but then I saw the sea getting closer and closer but then I got to the mouth then I got to the sea I died. By Wilson
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey in the shiny river. I travelled up the snow mountain as soon as I got to the top the wind carried me. Suddenly I transformed into a cloud. The strong wind blew me on top of the sea and suddenly it started raining. I fell into the sea. I was so happy because I was home. By Madison D
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey in a waterfall. I felt terrified of falling but when I fell I was fine. I went down the river and eventually I got to the sea. In the sea ships rapidly hit me. By Leif
As a tiny droplet of water, I started my journey at the freezing cold mountain. I was feeling cheerful because my family was at the sea. So I started to go to the rain faster and faster. I made my way through the enormous trees at last! Now I had to go through the big river. I kept going. I was going to see my family. I was there with my family and I gave my mum a big hug in the sea. By Margot

As a tiny droplet of water, i started my journey on the misty hills I rose from the hills and then the river lured me to the sea and then I felt happy and calm then I was home and happy with all the fish and I turned into a beautiful cloud and I felt happy and felt clam at home finally as the water glowed under me.
